Tech Meetup Glasgow – What’s it all about?

Tech Meetup is an event for everyone in the tech community in and around Glasgow, welcoming everyone from experienced developers to students or those starting out their careers. LendInvest have been sponsoring this event since January 2023 as part of our efforts to support the thriving tech community in Glasgow and grow our presence in the area.

This month’s event was well attended again with over 50 people in attendance at the University of Strathclyde, including those from companies like Siemens, TCS, Talent Clouds and of course LendInvest. The meet ups always start by spending 5 minutes getting to know those sitting nearby, understanding what everyone is aiming to get out of the session. 

The first talk was from Naveen Pathak from TCS, talking about the different approaches to design thinking with a focus on innovation and creativity in problem solving. The big takeaway was to focus on really understanding and interrogating a problem, before building a prototype and then failing quickly to iterate and improve quickly. Naveen gave a great quote from Einstein that summed this up well:

“If I had an hour to solve a problem I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions”.

The second presentation was from Douglas McCallum on “fuzzing”. There were a lot of people in the room who had never heard of fuzzing, with noone currently using it in their work. Douglas explained that fuzzing was developed as a way to complete unit testing at speed by throwing random data at a specific piece of code. This can then be built on as a method for testing at functional or whole app level. Noone knows why it’s called fuzzing, but Douglas’ best guess was it is something to do with Fuzzy Logic.

It was a brilliant evening with lots of key takeaways. If you’re interested in attending, Tech Meetup – Glasgow hosts an event with 2 speakers on the first Thursday of each month. Next month’s event will be Thursday 1st June with potentially both speakers talking from LendInvest.
